HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT LAWYER, IF NOT BASED ON PRICE ?
If you came to this Page to find out what I’ll charge you for a Will, a Divorce, or another legal problem, or you are considering calling me to ask, “How much do you charge?” STOP.
I am affordable, but it’s not the right question.
The questions you want to ask first are: What do I really need to have in place to ensure that me, my family, and money are cared for the way I want? How do I solve my problem and what is the best way to do it?
Far too many people make their family decisions based on what it’s going to cost. Sometimes, that may be the right criteria. Most of the time it’s not.
The Problem Is; You Don’t Know, What You Don’t Know!
I don’t charge for Wills or Divorces. I charge for advice, guidance, counsel, drafting, and support. The Will/Divorce is essentially free. As Abraham Lincoln said; “A lawyer's time and advice are his stock in trade.”
When you get on the internet to download a cheap will (Blog: Compare an Internet Site with an Attorney’s Service to a Client) or fill out canned documents from a self-help book or DIY kit from the office supply store, you don’t know what you are actually putting into place or setting in motion. When tragedy later strikes, or the outcome is not what you expected, your left holding the bag. "Free" legal consultations - free legal advice, is worth about what you pay for it — or, in some cases, less.
When you hire me, you are not paying for documents. You aren't renting my time, but my brain and my heart. You are hiring an ally who will help you get your affairs in order, and keep them there across time and changes in the law, and your life.
When you call me and ask how much for a Will, a Divorce, or some legal procedure for a perceived problem, I can’t give you an answer because I don’t even know if that’s what you need! An attorney is just like a Doctor. An examination, and possibly some medical tests, must be performed before an accurate diagnosis of your medical condition can be made. An attorney must first have a consultation with you, and possibly review any pertinent documents that have a bearing on your problem, before an accurate legal analysis can be made. Only then can a realistic estimate of cost be made.
My process begins with an in person legal consultation, lasting at least an hour. You will then usually receive a package of information with homework for you to complete so you can benefit most from the time with me. If a divorce is desired, a detailed questionnaire will be provided for you to complete at home and then returned. I want every interaction of ours to be extremely valuable to you. I’ll review the homework you complete. And then we’ll invest our time together exploring your life, looking at what would happen to you, your children, your assets and debts.
You will feel:
If, after we spend that time together, it turns out you need a Will or any other type of legal issue resolution, it will be because we came to that conclusion together. Then, I will offer you the legal procedures or documents that will cover the different options for taking care of things the way you want. [Tips on How Much Will My Divorce Cost?]
When you find the right lawyer, he or she will become a member of your team for the long term, not just for this one transaction. Your lawyer should be approachable and want to be in a long-term relationship with you.
